Spain: Severe Flooding Hits Barcelona Airport as DANA Storm Wreaks Havoc Across Catalonia
Barcelona, Spain - November 04, 2024 Catalonia is reeling from severe flooding as the deadly DANA storm unleashes torrential rains across the region, prompting the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) to issue a red warning, particularly for coastal and pre-coastal areas. The Catalan meteorological service, Meteocat, has described the situation as posing “significant danger,” with extreme rainfall affecting communities like Baix Llobregat, where Civil Protection has labeled the storm as “maximum danger.” In Barcelona, rainfall accumulation has reached staggering levels, with some coastal areas experiencing up to 180 liters per square meter in just 12 hours. Critical routes such as the C-32 are closed due to flooding, and the Catalan Traffic Service (SCT) is advising residents to avoid all non-essential travel as conditions worsen. Barcelona Airport is facing severe challenges, with significant leaks and flooding disrupting operations. Terminal T1 and parking facilities have been heavily affected, recording 96 liters of rain. Flight operations have suffered greatly, with 17 diversions and numerous delays leaving passengers stranded or forced to alter their travel plans. Authorities are working to mitigate the impact of the storm, but ongoing rain complicates their efforts. Other regions of Catalonia are also grappling with severe weather alerts. Tarragona is under an orange warning, having already recorded 110 liters per square meter, while Sitges reports 59 liters, intensifying flood risks across the area. Aemet warns that heavy rains are expected to persist throughout the day, further challenging infrastructure and travel. Residents are urged to exercise caution and heed travel advisories as local agencies focus on immediate safety concerns and long-term recovery efforts. With the storm’s impact still unfolding, travelers and citizens alike are encouraged to stay informed through local news and official channels.
