New York, United States - November 04, 2024 A Chinese envoy on Monday called on all parties to exercise restraint on the Korean Peninsula issue, avoid the escalation of tensions, and work jointly to ease the situation as soon as possible. Speaking at a United Nations Security Council meeting following the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile by Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on October 31, China's permanent representative to the United Nations Fu Cong noted the continued tensions on the Peninsula and increasing antagonism and confrontation serve no one's interests. The Security Council should play a constructive role on the Korean Peninsula issue and take concrete measures to ease the situation and enhance mutual trust rather than imposing sanctions and exerting pressure, Fu said. The relevant countries should take solid actions and put forth feasible plans for the political settlement of the issue, instead of using the Security Council to fuel antagonism. While claiming it seeks to safeguard the international nuclear non-proliferation system and denuclearize Korean Peninsula, the U.S. has constantly increased its strategic forces on the Peninsula, Fu said, urging the U.S. to stop such dangerous wrongdoings, cancel and abandon the relevant deployment, and help ease the situation and create conditions for the peacefully resolving the crisis through dialogue.
