This is the terrifying moment an extreme storm turned a road into white water rapids.

Footage captured by Mr Li shows a flooded motorway, with hailstones the size of broad beans pouring down in Gansu, China, on August 25.

Hailstones form when raindrops are carried by thunderstorm updrafts into freezing areas of the atmosphere. As they rise, they freeze and grow by colliding with other raindrops that freeze onto them. This can also occur during spring and summer thunderstorms.
