A female student was arrested while reportedly protesting Iran's stringent dress code.

The young woman was said to have stripped off her clothes after she was allegedly harassed by members of the Basij - an Iranian volunteer paramilitary group - for reportedly failing to wear a headscarf at the prestigious Islamic Azad University in Tehran on November 2.

Footage shows the defiant student sauntering around the campus in only a bra and panties - starkly contrasting to the other women garbed in head-to-toe clothes and black veils.

Amnesty Iran said the protester was 'violently arrested', and called for her protection while detained.

The organisation said: 'Pending her release, authorities must protect her from torture and other ill-treatment and ensure access to family and lawyer. Allegations of beatings & sexual violence against her during arrest need independent & impartial investigations. Those responsible must be held to account.'

In Iran, women face numerous restrictions under Sharia laws enforced by 'morality police' that limit their freedoms in areas such as dress, public behaviour, and access to certain roles in society.

The compulsory hijab law mandates that women cover their hair and dress modestly, with strict penalties for non-compliance. Iranian women have been advocating for greater rights and equality despite these restrictions.

In September 2022, Mahsa Amini, 22, died after being detained by Iran's morality police for allegedly violating hijab rules. Her death sparked a wave of protests across Iran and global condemnation and became a symbol for the women's rights movement in the conservative country.
