Clearwater, United States - October 04, 2024 A heroic rescue unfolded in Clearwater when an elderly dog, blind and deaf, fell into a canal and was saved by a vigilant police officer patrolling the area. On October 4, in the aftermath of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, Sgt. Mahoney was on duty in the Island Estates neighborhood when she spotted the struggling dog flailing in the water. The dog’s serious impairments made her vulnerable, and the recent hurricanes heightened the risk of her being swept out into the Gulf of Mexico. Acting quickly, Sgt. Mahoney grabbed a pole and managed to pull the frightened dog to safety. “She almost drowned in there,” Mahoney remarked in body camera footage. “I don't know how long she would have lasted.” The rescue was successful, and the dog was returned unharmed to her grateful owners, who welcomed her back with open arms.
