STORYLINE:
The government of New Zealand said Tuesday that it will co-invest 8 million NZ dollars to boost beef and lamb exports to China.
New Zealand aims to position its beef and lamb as the highest-quality red meats available to Chinese consumers, Trade and Agriculture Minister Todd McClay said Tuesday at a signing ceremony during the seventh China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai.
New Zealand's government launched its "Taste Pure Nature" campaign to differentiate its meat from that of competitors, said McClay, who hoped to drive better returns for Kiwi farmers and processors.
Silver Fern Farms, New Zealand's largest red meat exporter, has had a presence in China for nearly 30 years. Chief Executive Dan Boulton told Xinhua last week that China is one of the company's key markets.
To cater to China's growing middle class, Boulton said, Silver Fern Farms has expanded its retail channels this year and is now supplying high-end grass-fed beef and lamb products to local supermarkets in China's central and western regions.
The Chinese market remains an important growth engine for global meat exporters, Boulton said, adding that he expects to leverage the spillover effect of the ongoing CIIE to enhance the company's understanding of the Chinese market. (1 NZ dollar equals 0.6 U.S. dollars)
