Mother beats slim survival odds to make recover from brain aneurysm
A mother-of-three beat slim survival odds to recover from a ruptured brain aneurysm.
Julianne Smith, 38, recovered from a cerebral aneurysm with only a 10 per cent survival rate.
The incident occurred on October 4 when Julianne collapsed in her kitchen and fell into a coma for more than a week.
Her 10-year-old daughter called Julianne's husband, Mike, who suspected a stroke. Paramedics arrived quickly and transported her to the hospital, where doctors diagnosed a subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by the aneurysm.
The medical team at Cleveland Clinic, led by neurosurgeon Dr. Nina Zobenica Moore, acted swiftly to drain fluid from her brain, perform an endovascular coiling procedure to stop the bleeding and manage the swelling that threatened her life.
A right hemicraniectomy was also performed, which involved removing part of Julianne's skull to relieve pressure on her brain.
She was then treated for severe vasospasm, a complication that could have caused a stroke.
After weeks of rehabilitation, Julianne regained her ability to walk and drive and returned to her volunteer work.
Julianne said: 'I'm back to doing the things I love. I'm able to drive my kids where they need to go. I can go to my daughter's volleyball games. I'm so grateful I'm still here to witness it.'
Mike credits her determination for her recovery.
She added: 'Once she puts her mind to something, she's going to do it. I think that really helped her get better.'
Julianne also expressed gratitude for the medical team's care.
She said: 'From the first responders to the doctors and physical therapists, I'm so grateful to them all.'
She is now focused on spending time with her family and making new memories.
An aneurysm is an abnormal bulge or swelling in the wall of a blood vessel, typically an artery. While aneurysms can develop anywhere in the circulatory system, they most commonly occur in the aorta (the body's main artery that runs along the trunk) and in blood vessels in the brain.
