Torrent, Spain - November 08, 2024 In a harrowing video capturing the aftermath of the DANA storm, National Police officers Juan Manuel and Carlos are seen executing a life-saving rescue in the urbanización “El Pantano” of Torrent. The footage reveals the moment when they managed to extract a 99-year-old woman from her flooded home, where she was found completely numb from the cold with water up to her knees. The officers were part of a larger operation where they had already saved approximately 60 individuals from the brink of drowning due to the overflowing barranco. The urgency of the situation was palpable, with the police having to act swiftly as the water, reaching an estimated height of four metres, carried debris with formidable force. The rescue operation began when the CIMACC-091 dispatch centre sent the officers to the scene on Tuesday evening around 6:30 pm, following reports of the ravine's overflow. The police had to create an improvised rescue line using a rope to facilitate the evacuation of residents to higher ground. As the water continued to rise, Juan Manuel and Carlos, risking their own lives, crossed the torrent to reach those still trapped. Their efforts didn't stop even after the initial group was saved; they continued searching for more victims as the water levels began to recede. They heard cries for help from a collapsing house and managed to save three elderly men through a gap made by fallen trees. It was during another rescue that they learned of the two elderly women, leading to the discovery of the 99-year-old woman. The officers had to physically carry her from the partially destroyed home. After an exhausting 15-hour service, officers Juan Manuel and Carlos, along with their team, successfully evacuated the most affected areas. Their selfless actions under extreme conditions have saved countless lives, showcasing the valour and commitment of Spain's National Police during this natural disaster.
