Catastrophic coal spill damage found on beach in the Philippines
A beach turned black from catastrophic coal spill damage from a capsized cargo ship in the Philippines.
The vessel carrying more than 11,000 metric tonnes of charcoal ran aground last month, spilling its contents into the sea during Tropical Storm Trami's onslaught, contaminating a marine sanctuary in the Philippines.
Footage shows pieces of charcoal scattered around and covering most of the sand at the Masinloc Oyon Bay Protected Area in Zambales province on November 6.
Almost two weeks later, coal littered the islands while residents called for prompt action from government agencies.
Resident Kenzo Ginez said: 'My neighbours initiated the clean-up themselves. Several sacks were filled with coal, but there is still so much left.'
Trami, locally named Kristine, left more than 136 dead in the Philippines before heading to Vietnam, where it killed at least eight and dozens injured.
