STORYLINE:
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on Thursday inaugurated the 15th edition of the Dakar Biennale of Contemporary African Art (Dak'Art) international arts festival.
Faye opened the event in Dakar, the capital of Senegal, by paying tribute to "the late artists who left their indelible mark on the organization of the Biennale of Contemporary African Art."
SOUNDBITE (French): BASSIROU DIOMAYE FAYE, Senegalese President
"The theme of this year's show, 'The Wake,' shows that one of the essential functions of art is to capture the evanescence, the transitory, the fugitive of a world in perpetual motion, to give it consistency, depth, and density. An assumed artistic vocation therefore consists in organizing the chaos of the world to give it meaning. Culture is part of our moral and intellectual sovereignty. It also guarantees respect for all those with different histories and visions of the world, as long as they engage in a fruitful dialogue of equal dignity and mutual benefit, to strengthen partnership and mutual understanding. It is with these wishes that I officially declare open the 15th edition of the Dakar Biennale of Contemporary African Art 2024, and thank you for your kind attention."
The event will run until Dec. 7.
