US: 80 Ducks Rescued and Reclaimed as Mountain Fire Threatens Camarillo
Camarillo, United States - November 07, 2024 On November 7, Ventura County Animal Services sheltered 80 ducks brought in for safekeeping as the Mountain fire raged dangerously close. The swift action was part of efforts to protect animals from the blaze, which by Friday had scorched 20,765 acres, destroyed numerous homes, and was only 7% contained. Footage released on Friday showcased the quacking bevy being ushered into a secure, fenced area at the shelter. The scene was a testament to the dedication of animal service workers amid the chaos of evacuations. The story took a hopeful turn on November 8, as the evacuation orders were lifted, allowing the ducks to return home. A heartwarming video captured the moment: “Alright. We have 80 ducks being reclaimed by their owner after evacuation orders were lifted. They're all heading back home. This is great,” a Ventura County Animal Services staff member narrated. The footage showed the ducks being carefully herded, some stragglers needing gentle guidance to join the flock. “We’re not using the shovel,” the staff member clarified humorously, adding, “Just using it to keep them back.” With the return of the ducks, the shelter continued its busy day as pet owners arrived to reclaim their animals, including dogs, cats, and even horses that had been brought to the fairgrounds for safekeeping. The ducks, in good hands during their stay, finally quacked their way home as the staff cheered. The sight of animals being returned offered a rare glimmer of relief for a community facing the ongoing threat of the devastating Mountain fire.
