Mauritius - November 10, 2024 Mauritius, an Indian Ocean island nation, kicked off its 2024 national legislative election on Monday. It is estimated that more than 1 million registered voters will go to 340 polling places across the country on the day to vote for the new National Assembly members. According to the election commission, a total of 891 candidates from 73 political parties or coalitions are competing for seats in the National Assembly. The preliminary results of the election are expected to be announced on Monday. The leader of the majority in the National Assembly will become the new prime minister. Following the announcement of the results, the prime minister will nominate cabinet members, who will then be formally appointed by the president to form a new government. The National Assembly of Mauritius has a unicameral system and consists of 70 members with a term of five years. The voters will elect directly 62 members of the National Assembly while the eight additional "best losers" will be appointed to fill the remaining seats.
