Insurgents throw bomb at police booth in southern Thailand
Suspected insurgents reportedly hurled a pipe bomb at a police checkpoint in southern Thailand.
CCTV footage shows how the alleged rebels drove by and lobbed the improvised explosive at a police booth in Pattani province on November 11 evening.
Thung Yang Daeng Police Station officers arrived to investigate the scene, where they found damaged sandbags and some shrapnel.
Police Colonel Alam Mekharat, superintendent of the Thung Yang Daeng Police Station, said no one was hurt in the attack.
He said: 'The investigation revealed that two suspects on a motorcycle approached the checkpoint, and the passenger threw the pipe bomb before they rode away.
'After the incident, police and local authorities stationed officers on routes to intercept them and reviewed security camera footage at the scene and along the escape route to track them down for legal action.'
The pair were believed to be from the same group that targetted a fuel station in the area in March.
Authorities believe the attacks were carried out 'to create unrest'.
Islamic separatist terror attacks target the three southernmost provinces of Thailand - Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat - next to the border with Mulsim neighbors Malaysia. Thai state employees and infrastructure are often hit while attacks on civilians are rare.
Officials believe the conflict dates to a deal in 1909 that the British Empire struck to incorporate the Muslim region into the Siamese mainland.
The region's culture is more similar to Malaysia and dramatically different to Buddhist Thais causing decades of tension that lead to the emergence of separatist groups fighting for independence in the 1960s.
The struggle has continued ever since with more than 7,344 people killed and 13,641 injured between January 2004 and March 2022.
The British Foreign & Commonwealth Office warns against all but essential travel to the region while Canada's government warns its nationals to 'avoid all travel' to the three provinces.
