Berlin, Germany - November 10, 2024 Demonstrators gathered at Berlin's Wittenbergplatz on Sunday, November 10, 2024, to demand more robust protections for Jewish communities in Germany, as antisemitic incidents rise globally in the aftermath of Hamas' October 7, 2023, terrorist attacks on Israel. The rally, organized under the slogan "For a Life Without Fear: Protect Jewish Life, Enough is Enough," highlighted a surge in antisemitic incidents across Europe, including Germany and the Netherlands, where Jewish institutions and individuals have increasingly been targeted. The protest took place on the 86th anniversary of Kristallnacht, a night of violent antisemitic attacks that foreshadowed the Holocaust, underscoring demonstrators' concerns that Germany was not doing enough to ensure the safety of its Jewish population. "Jewish voices have been fighting for more than a year to be heard, but nothing changes," stated the organizers. "Incidents are escalating weekly, and Germany's Jewish community is left nearly alone to face this hatred." Organizers called on the German government and broader society to confront what they described as a troubling indifference to antisemitism. Rabbi Teichtal, Rabbi of the Jewish Community of Berlin and president of the Chabad Jewish Education Center, urged the crowd to reject despair in his speech, stating, "We will not be defeated. Our response to darkness is more light, our answer to hate is more peace, more togetherness, more light. Am Yisrael Chai," or "The people of Israel live." His words were met with applause, capturing the spirit of defiance and unity among those gathered.٨٭First Soundbite with Yehuda Teichtal, Orthodox Rabbi of the Jewish Community of Berlin and president of the Chabad Jewish Education Centre in Berlin:܇܌"The German government has been actively trying to combat anti-Semitism. However, more needs to be done. It's not sufficient just to have understanding and to stand with us in solidarity. We need actively to do all we can that there should be no place for anti-Semitism and an active support for a vibrant Jewish life."ࡐࡕSecond Soundbite with Yehuda Teichtal:ࢀ"We have to have a situation where nobody, no person should be afraid to walk down the street expressing his or her religion, whether Jews, Muslims, Christians, anybody. It's extremely important that there be a tolerant society where everybody can feel proud to identify themselves as who they are in a democratic society. We have to understand this is not only against Jews, this is against all people that respect democracy, and this is our joint task on an individual level and on a government level to make sure that there's a tolerant society for all people in an active manner."
