Mount Lewotobi volcano eruption kills 10 and injures 63 in Indonesia
Footage shows the eruption of the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki volcano which killed at least 10 residents living nearby in Indonesia.
Officials said the volcano began spewing explosive plumes of lava just before midnight on Sunday, November 3.
Burning rocks and lava landed on homes in a two-mile radius of the volcano. Many properties were seat light and at least 10 people died and 63 were injured.
Authorities said they immediately began to evacuate more than 4,000 residents in several nearby villages on Flores Island.
Hadi Wijaya, from The Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), said today that the volcano has been placed on its highest alert level.
He said: 'After the eruption, there was a power outage and then it was raining and big lightning which caused panic among residents.'
The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre later reported that Mount Lewotobi erupted again on November 7 at 10:48 am.
Mount Lewotobi remains on the highest alert level, with a designated danger zone extending 4.3 miles (7 kilometres) from the crater.
Local disaster agency official Kensius Didimus reported that no casualties resulted from the latest eruption, as residents within the danger zone around the crater had already been evacuated to nearby villages.
Hadi Wijaya, chief of the Centre for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation, reported that the 5,197-foot (1,584-metre) volcano erupted 11 times, with the latest and largest ash column reaching 26,240 feet (8,000 metres).
A Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation has also been issued at the red level, the highest warning, prohibiting flights below 3.7 miles (6 kilometres) above and around the crater.
Aircraft are advised to prepare for potential ash clouds.
