Footage shows firefighters extinguishing a fire on a Boeing 737 cargo plane after it caught fire during a flight and was forced to make an emergency landing.

The incident occurred at Sao Paulo International Airport in Guarulhos, Brazil, on Saturday, November 9.

The first video shows smoke rising after the emergency landing, while a second clip shows firefighters climbing a ladder to reach the aircraft, with a bright fire burning intensely inside.

Local media reported that the aircraft belonged to Total Cargo and that it was forced to land after a fire started in its hold.

The Boeing 737-4Q8 aircraft had departed from Vitoria, in the state of Espirito Santo, and was en route to Sao Paulo to deliver packages for the Brazilian Post Office.

Authorities said at least 20 per cent of the parcels and the plane's fuselage were destroyed in the incident.

The cause of the fire on board is unknown, and Brazilian authorities are investigating the blaze.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
