Spirit Airlines plane peppered with gunfire while landing in Haiti
A Spirit Airlines plane was peppered with gunshots while landing at an airport in Haiti.
The Airbus A320 was touching down at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince when it was met with a barrage of gunfire on November 11.
Flight NK 951 , which had come from Fort Lauderdale in Florida, was reportedly around 550ft above the ground with its landing gear deployed when it was struck by gunshots. It pulled back up into the air and diverted to the Cibao International Airport in Santiago City in the Dominican Republic.
Video and pictures show the bullet-riddled cabin, with holes piercing an overhead compartment.
Spirit Airlines said a flight attendant was treated for minor injuries and no passengers were harmed. It added the plane was damaged and taken out of commission.
The Haitian civil aviation authority issued a notice to airmen that 'air traffic operations are temporarily suspended' at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport. The notice took effect at 2 pm local time and was expected to end on November 18.
The alleged attack comes amid mounting gang violence and political turmoil in Haiti, which swore in a new interim prime minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime on November 10.
In October, armed gangs opened fire on a United Nations (UN) helicopter carrying 18 people while it was flying over Port-au Prince. The aircraft belonged to UN's World Food Program. It was reported to have landed safely with no one inside injured.
