A wild leopard stuck in a boar trap was rescued in India.

The big cat was ensnared in Asanbahali Reserve Forest under the Dhenkanal Forest Division and was saved after a 10-hour operation on Thursday, November 7.

Residents were the first to spot the large feline in the trap and promptly reported the incident to the Mahabirod range.

Three rescue teams from Bhubaneswar, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Angul, and Kapilas rescue centres and over 100 forest department personnel from various forest ranges within the Dhenkanal Forest Division swiftly responded and began the rescue operation.

The animal was safely rescued after being tranquillised, sustaining only minor injuries.

Estimated to be just over five years old, the male leopard is reportedly in good health and will undergo further monitoring at Nandankanan following treatment.

Sumit Kar, the DFO of Dhenkanal, confirmed that the Forest Department has launched an investigation into the incident.

Efforts are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the wild cat's entanglement in the boar trap.

Local reports indicate that leopards have been attacking and killing individuals in the country. Statistics estimate there have been 551 deaths from leopard and tiger attacks over a span of 20 years.
