Police escorted a massive Christmas tree to Rockefeller Centre in preparation for the holiday season.

The NYPD Highway Unit and New York State Police transported the 74ft tall and 11-tonne heavy Norway spruce from Massachusetts to New York City on a flatbed truck on November 9.

The tree, donated by the Albert family from West Stockbridge, Massachusetts, was cut down on the morning of November 7 for its 140-mile journey.

The donor said that the tree was planted in 1967.

'It is also the first Rockefeller Center Christmas tree from Massachusetts since 1959,' they added.

Local reports said that after the holidays, the tree will be milled into lumber for Habitat for Humanity in January.

The tree's lighting ceremony is scheduled for December 4 and will feature more than 50,000 multicoloured LED bulbs wrapped around it and a Swarovski star topped with three million crystals.

Each year, an estimated 125 million people visit the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, with holiday crowds gathering to admire this iconic symbol.
