Nuseirat Camp - November 08, 2024 Concerns are mounting over human rights violations and the number of casualties caused by Israeli military attacks targeting civilians in the Gaza Strip, according to a recent report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The investigation revealed that around 70% of the verified deaths were women and children, who suffered attacks by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The youngest victim, whose death was verified by the UN, was a one-day-old child, and the oldest was a 97-year-old woman. Overall, 44% of the victims were people aged 18 or younger, with children between 5 and 9 years old being the largest age category among the victims. Data collected during the first six months of the Israeli occupation of the territory of Gaza reports the deaths of 34,535 Palestinians, 77,704 wounded and 10,000 missing as of April 30, 2024. “Civilians, including children, women and men, have borne the brunt of the attacks, the ‘total siege’ and various forms of continued closure and blockade by the IDF in Gaza, through unprecedented levels of killings, deaths, injuries, starvation, sickness, disease, displacement, arrests and destruction,” the report notes.
