This is the shocking moment a charging mobile phone exploded while a toddler was playing.

The child was throwing pillows to his father, who was sitting on a couch, when the device short-circuited in their living room in Bangkok, Thailand, on May 26.

CCTV footage shows the gadget emitting thick white smoke and sparks. This prompted the family to step back, while one of them quickly unplugged the charger from the socket.

No one was reportedly injured in the incident.

Charging a battery for too long or with too much voltage can cause overheating and fires.

When a lithium battery fails, it can undergo thermal runaway, which is a violent bursting of one or more cells. This releases toxic, flammable, and explosive gases, leading to an intense, self-sustaining fire.
