Loose moose causes £10k damage to prestige cars
A moose got loose - and caused over £10k to prestige cars.
A Swedish BMW and Mini parts specialist found themselves with an unusual customer when the large animal snuck into their garage.
Viktor Örtegren, company director of Schmiedmann in Fjärås, was startled by the moose as he stored his speedboat at the weekend.
Alexander Friis Larsen, Schmiedmann spokesman, says: "Viktor Örtegren was at his company to put his private speedboat into winter storage when he heard some loud noises."
"He looked around the corner of the speedboat, now placed inside the building, as he thought a customer had come by. But just as he rounded the boat, a huge moose jumped past him."
"Viktor was shocked and hid immediately. When it became quiet, he dared to take another look – the moose was still there and suddenly stood up on its hind legs, slamming its front legs down into the hood of a beautiful, freshly painted, and almost fully restored classic BMW 850i customer car. After that, it stomped around on the car."
"Afterward, the moose found its way out – running across the busy E6/E20 motorway nearby, miraculously without being hit – and into the forest."
Alexander says two additional classic BMWs also suffered damage in the encounter: another customer car, a BMW E31 850i, and a tuned and styled BMW E36 3-series show car belonging to one of Viktor's employees.
Alexander continues: "When Viktor contacted the owner of the most damaged BMW 850i and told him, "I am terribly sorry – but a big moose came by and stomped your BMW 850 to pieces" – the customer initially thought it was a prank or a joke."
"Initially, Viktor had actually feared that the stressed animal would see and attack him, so he hid behind the boat."
"Although it's sad to see all the damage to the cars, Viktor is just relieved that no one – including the moose – was hurt in the incident."
The company estimate the moose caused damage to the three cars worth around 150,000 kroner (£10,630).
