STORYLINE:
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty called on the international community to pressure Israel to allow sufficient humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip and assume its responsibilities towards Gaza's civilians in accordance with international humanitarian law, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.
Abdelatty made the remarks during his meeting with the Senior UN Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in Gaza, Sigrid Kaag, earlier in the day, according to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry's statement.
The Egyptian foreign minister stressed that the daily entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza "is not sufficient to deal with the scale of the humanitarian disaster" witnessed by the enclave.
Abdelatty highlighted the necessity of working on doubling the humanitarian response to the needs of the Palestinians in Gaza with the onset of winter and in light of the spread of famine and epidemics caused by Israeli policies and measures.
Israel has been launching a large-scale offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip to retaliate against a Hamas rampage through the southern Israeli border on Oct. 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and about 250 taken hostage.
The Palestinian death toll from ongoing Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip has risen to 43,665, Gaza-based health authorities said in a statement on Tuesday.
