Locals witnessed the colourful aerostat nearly landing on the water in Vientiane, Laos, on November 10.
Nialbiting footage captured by Toukta Insixiengmai shows kayakers in life vests beneath the balloon, ready to assist, while the aeronaut adjusts the burner to heat the air.
Moments later, he successfully regained control, preventing the balloon and its passengers from being drenched in the water.
The filmer said: 'When people in the water saw the balloon approaching the lake, they immediately swam to the centre to assist in case it crashed. We're glad that didn't happen.'
