Nine women were buried alive when a mound of earth collapsed - killing four and seriously injuring five others.

The victims were reportedly digging a ditch near a bridge construction site when the ground caved in, trapping them in Kasganj, Uttar Pradesh, on November 12.

Police were immediately called to retrieve the individuals, and an excavator was used to rescue them.

Local reports identified the deceased as Ram Beti, 29, Prema Devi, 36, Saraswati Devi, 27, and Pinky, 12, all from Rampur village. The five critically injured victims - Maheswari, 40, Krishna, 45, Hemlata, 40, Prem Singh, 32, and Arjun, 8 - are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.

SP Rakesh Bharti said: 'Nine people had gone to dig red mud to paint their houses for the Devuthani Ekadashi festival. When they entered a 10ft-deep (3m) ditch, the soil collapsed on them. The ditch was dug for a bridge construction project in the area.'

District Magistrate Medha Roopam added: 'Strict action will be taken against anyone found negligent. An investigation is underway.'
