A Chinese tourist was killed in a speedboat crash in Indonesia.

Holidaymaker Wu Hao was on the Semoga Jaya speedboat touring the Musi River in South Sumatra when the watercraft collided with the Tiga Berlian canoe at around 9 am on November 13.

Raymond Konstantin, head of the Palembang search and rescue office, said: 'While crossing the waters of Tenggirik Bay, precisely at the bend, there was a collision. The speedboat avoided the Doa Bersama canoe which was being towed by the Tiga Berlian vessel.

'The speedboat lost control after it hit the left side of the Tiga Berlian boat. It took on water and sank, causing injuries and one death.'

The marine chief added that two teams were deployed to rescue the 22 passengers and two crew members on the speedboat, which was travelling from the port city of Palembang to the Sei Baung area.

Responders said they found Wu floating not far from the crash site at 10:50 am local time. The search and rescue mission was concluded after his body was collected from the river.

Indonesia frequently experiences boat accidents due to overcrowding, poor maintenance, and challenging weather conditions especially during monsoon season. Boat travel is common in the archipelago with more than 17,000 islands, but safety regulations are often lax, leading to tragic incidents.
