Dozens of flights to and from holiday island Bali in Indonesia were grounded as a volcano spewed a six-mile ash plume into the sky on Wednesday.

Thousands of passengers were left stranded as airlines in Australia, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia and Singapore, cancelled flights in Bali and nearby provinces following the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in East Nusa Tenggara on November 13.

Footage shows tourists sitting at the Lombok International Airport, where authorities said at least 3,900 tourists were stranded.

A disgruntled passenger who recorded the situation said: 'I am a staff with Lombok Safari Tour & Travel. Her flight AK305 Air Asia from Lombok to Kuala Lumpur was canceled.'

Airport manager Barata Singgih Riwahono said on November 13: 'As of 2:30 pm, the details of flights cancelled are as follows: 18 domestic departures and 15 arrivals, and for international flights, three departures and three arrivals.'

Officials said some 50 flights have been disrupted in the past three days as restive Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, one of two volcanic mountains that make up Mount Lewotobi on Flores island, continues to erupt.

Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency said on Tuesday that nine people have been killed, 31 injured, and more than 11,000 displaced in the multiple eruptions from the twin peaks in recent weeks.

Indonesia is part of the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
