Beautiful Rainbow Bee-eater at his nest burrow in sandy soil near Herdsman Lake.
Beautiful Rainbow Bee-eaters (Merops ornatus) are found in the eastern islands of Indonesia, in Papua New Guinea and throughout Australia. They usually spend the austral winter in the northern parts of their range before some migrate south to breed in Spring. Like other species of Bee-eaters, Rainbow Bee-eaters excavate nest holes in exposed embankments and directly into the ground if the soil is suitable. This male Rainbow Bee-eater was perching on a patch of sand that contained his nest burrow, and after a while began digging sand before disappearing into the nest hole. The local council has placed steel mesh on the ground to prevent predators digging up the nest.
