Woman crushed to death by overturned shipping container
A woman was killed when a detached shipping container overturned on her car in Malaysia.
Lee Zi Rou, 21, was headed to work when an oncoming lorry sped through the Jalin Bukit Tengah intersection in Penang on November 13 morning.
Dashcam video shows how the container toppled from the trailer when the lorry made a sharp turn. It landed on top of the woman's sedan while her car was stopped at the traffic light.
Bandar Perda Fire and Rescue (BBP) Operations Commander Mohd Nor Azamuddin Abdullah said a rescue team arrived at the scene after receiving a report.
He said: 'It was found that the accident involved five vehicles - three cars and two lorries including the trailer. There were two victims trapped as a result of an overturned container.
'The 25-year-old male victim was removed from his vehicle by civilians before our arrival and was taken to a hospital for treatment. As for the female victim who was trapped, we used special equipment to remove her.'
Authorities said Lee Zi Rou was declared dead at the scene. She was alone in her car at the time of the accident.
The other trapped individual was identified by police as Tan Chou Theng, 25. He was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Firefighters said the fallen container was removed from the road using two cranes.
Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief ACP Helmi Aris said the 51-year-old lorry driver, not named in local reports, was detained for further investigation. He said preliminary screenings for urine and alcohol returned negative results.
The police boss added: 'He will be charged at a Penang court with causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.'
Under Malaysia's Road Transport Act of 1987, causing death by reckless or dangerous driving is punishable by imprisonment between two and 10 years, and a fine between 5,000 and 20,000 MYR. (881 GBP to 3,523 GBP)
