Overloaded truck too heavy to go uphill rolls backwards and topples over
An overloaded pickup truck too heavy to drive uphill rolled backwards and toppled over.
The vehicle was on the way to deliver dozens of planter trees that were stacked on its cargo bed when it tried climbing the steep incline in on the island of Koh Phangan, Thailand, on November 13.
CCTV footage shows the truck ascending the road before it stopped around 82ft (25m) from the top of the slope.
It rolled back and hit the pavement before flipping over with its bonnet hitting the street lamp above.
A traffic officer who attended the scene said: 'We received a report of an accident in Koh Phangan in the evening. The car was overloaded with trees and attempted to accelerate on the curved uphill road.'
A local was seen rushing to help the driver and his female passenger who were both injured from the impact.
More residents and motorists stopped by to assist, with rescue team members extracting the driver and woman from the vehicle.
They were taken to Koh Phangan Hospital for treatment and no one else was hurt. Their car was towed off the road into a repair shop.
Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
