SOUNDBITE 1 (English): TIM BUCKLEY, Chief of Climate Energy Finance, a think-tank in Australia
"Without being flattering, China has already contributed enormously. China is the world's number one developer of wind farms, solar farms, pumped hydro storage, and electric vehicles. They've built world-leading technology. They've done it at a world-leading scale. And that leadership that I talk about comes from not just the deployment in the domestic context. It also comes in manufacturing and it comes in exports.
I think China is showing that it is delivering on its fair share of the Paris Agreement by actually helping developing nations decarbonize their economies, but not just through export, through manufacturing. Like we heard from BYD today, BYD is building factories in Brazil, in Uzbekistan, in Hungary, in Türkiye and in Thailand. So that is bringing high-quality jobs, manufacturing jobs, high-quality investment, high-quality technology to emerging markets. So those emerging markets become emboldened and encouraged to actually drive their decarbonization.
I think China has the potential to work with all sorts of nations around the world. They are exporting and helping other countries decarbonize. I think this is the phenomenal opportunity for China to work with other nations that involves collaboration, and that involves sharing of technology, sharing of exports, reducing trade barriers when we recognize it's in all of our national and global interest to do."
