Ten newborn babies were killed in a hospital fire in India.

The blaze reportedly broke out in the children's ward of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday, November 15.

Officials said the fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit. It began around 10:45 pm in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Another 16 children were injured and are currently receiving treatment.

Jhansi's Chief Medical Superintendent, Sachin Mahore, said: '54 children were admitted in the NICU ward, suddenly the oxygen concentrator caught fire, efforts were made to extinguish the fire but the fire spread immediately. Ten children have died so far; the rest are undergoing treatment.'

In another incident, seven babies were killed, and five others were injured in a hospital fire in Delhi on May 25. The blaze engulfed the building and ignited flammable oxygen tanks while the infants were still inside the New Born Baby Care Hospital.

The facility has been under investigation as it was found to have been running despite a two-month expired registration license to operate.
