Bungling doctor operates on boy's right eye instead of his left
A bungling surgeon sparked outrage for allegedly operating on a boy's right eye instead of his left.
Anand Verman was said to have performed the 45,000 INR (421 GBP) botched surgery on his patient Yudhisthir at the Anand Spectrum Hospital in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh state in India, on November 12.
Yudisthir's father, Nitin Bhati, said they had consulted the eye doctor for persistent watering in the boy's left eye for more than a week.
He said: 'The doctor told me that they suspected there was some plastic inside his eyes and suggested a surgery to correct it.'
The youngster safely underwent the procedure. However, when he arrived home, his mother noticed that the wrong eye had been bandaged.
Yudhisthir's family were said to have stormed the hospital and 'caused a commotion'. They filed a complaint with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Gautam Buddha Nagar distric calling for Anand's license to be revoked and for the hospital to be shut down.
Speaking to local media, CMO Sunil Kumar Sharma said his office was waiting for police to complete the investigation.
He said: 'As we get the complaint from police in the incident, the case will be investigated. I have no information on the matter.'
While the healthcare system in India has been improving, instances of medical malpractice are not uncommon. There are legal protections under the country's Consumer Protection Act and the Indian Penal Code, but patients often face difficulties in seeking redress due to complex legal procedures, lengthy trials, and limited awareness.
