STORYLINE:

A Kenyan expert has emphasized China's role in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, saying "China's attendance is going to be pivotal to APEC's growth."

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): STEPHEN NDEGWA, Lecturer in international relations at Nairobi-based United States International University-Africa
"We expect APEC to help global stability, and economic stability, especially. And when there's economic stability, things can easily be discussed on other issues. So, I think China's attendance is going to be pivotal to APEC's growth. It's going to be instrumental to APEC's growth. And so, this will have a spillover again from the region to the rest of the world. And there'll be more discussions on how multilateralism can grow from APEC and have a wide scope of global trade and development."

During the interview, Ndegwa also praised the Chinese model, pointing out that Africa can learn from China's experience for the betterment of society.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): STEPHEN NDEGWA, Lecturer in international relations at Nairobi-based United States International University-Africa
"We have seen China moving to the digital economy. We have seen China engaging in high-quality infrastructure development. We have seen China upscaling its products around the world. For me, it's an inspiration, and I have traveled to China a couple of times. We may not, of course, copy-paste, but they are very fundamental values that China holds that I believe are very relevant in an African context, and which we can use in order to mobilize labor, to mobilize our intellect, to mobilize our resources so that we can grow comprehensively."
