Doha, Qatar - November 19, 2024 Qatar has suspended mediation negotiations on ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of the detained personnel, said a spokesman of the Qatari Foreign Ministry on Tuesday. Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari made the statement at a press conference, saying that it's unacceptable to Qatar that relevant parties use Qatar's mediation to seek political interests. Ansari said that the suspension of mediation efforts does not mean that Qatar has stopped its diplomatic endeavor to cool down the regional situation. Qatar's position is firm and clear, that is, it is committed to achieving a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and ensuring that humanitarian aid enters the Gaza Strip, he said. Ansari also said that the Hamas office in Doha has been temporarily suspended, and members of the Hamas negotiation team who have lived in Doha for a long time are not in the city for the time being. He stressed that the office is not permanently closed, and Hamas personnel could travel freely between Qatar and other countries and regions. Hamas set up the office in Doha in 2012, aiming to build a channel for communication between all parties. The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs said this channel played a role in previous negotiations and facilitated a temporary ceasefire between Hamas and Israel in November last year. Israeli media quoted sources on Monday as saying that Hamas members had left Qatar last week for Türkiye. The Turkish side denied the report that very day, saying that it was not true. Several rounds of ceasefire talks in the Gaza Strip over the past few months have failed to produce an agreement, as significant differences remain between Israel and Hamas on core issues. The Palestinian death toll from the ongoing Israeli attacks in Gaza has risen to 43,972, with more than 104,008 injured, Gaza-based health authorities said in a statement released on Tuesday.
