Influencer arrested for promoting online gambling sites
A busty influencer was arrested for allegedly promoting gambling websites in Thailand.
Kulthada Sompong, 27, reportedly received cash payments to post revealing photos of herself advertising links to banned sites.
The Cyber Crime Investigation Division 4 raided her home in Udon Thani province on November 17 after police found her Facebook account containing numerous paid ads. The account had more than a million followers, with most of the posts showcasing Kulthada's shapely figure.
Police Major General Jittipon Ponprueksa, commander of Cyber Crime Investigation Division 4, said: ‘The suspect admitted that she was hired to post advertisements for the online gambling site for 3,000 baht per post. She did this over two to three months.
‘She would post her sexy pictures to gain attention on social media, and attach a link to the online gambling website, inviting her followers to play games.'
The office added that Kulthada will be charged with 'helping to advertise and directly or indirectly inviting people to play unauthorised gambling games'.
Gambling in Thailand is highly restricted and largely illegal under the Gambling Act of 1935, with exceptions for state-sponsored lotteries and horse racing betting. Despite this, underground gambling and online gambling are widespread, though both are considered illegal and punishable by fines or imprisonment.
Poker, and other games like slot machines and baccarat, fall under the law's 'List A' and are prohibited.
Organisers of List A games may be punished with detention between three months and three years, and a fine ranging from 500 to 5,000 baht.
While players may be either jailed for up to three years, fined up to 5,000 baht, or both.
