STORYLINE:

A rapidly growing interest in the Chinese language, reflected in the rising number of those interested in learning it, bodes well for Malaysia-China ties as it fosters mutual understanding and respect, a Malaysia-based cultural association said in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

In his remarks at a ceremony to mark the graduation of a Chinese language training program for Malaysian government officials, President of Han Culture Center Malaysia Goh Hin San said that a growing recognition of and interest in the Chinese language reflects the increased interaction between the two countries.

Goh added that strong support from the Chinese side has also greatly helped realize such efforts, as 12 outstanding students in the latest batch of trainees will be sent to China in a few days for further Chinese language study.

Among the graduates is Nurhana Masazing Abdullah, a communications officer from the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese and Malay): NURHANA MASAZING ABDULLAH, Communications officer from Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex
"I am very happy to participate in this Chinese language training program. I work at the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex. Many Chinese tourists visit there, and I speak to them in Chinese. This year marks the 50th anniversary of China-Malaysia diplomatic ties. I hope this relationship can continue to ensure cooperation between the two sides. We learn Chinese, and there can be more exchanges between China and Malaysia. I love learning the Chinese language."

Liang Chuyi, one of the Chinese language teachers, said the students are very enthusiastic about Chinese culture during the lessons, and their enthusiasm for the Chinese language is gradually growing.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): LIANG CHUYI, Chinese language teacher
"The Malay students have shown great enthusiasm for learning Chinese during the classes. As a Chinese language teacher, I deeply cherish the opportunity to come to Malaysia to teach Chinese. Many overseas Chinese people pay high attention to the Chinese language. I hope more Malays can learn Chinese and become ambassadors of cultural exchange between Malaysia and China."
