STORYLINE:
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and his Iranian counterpart, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, discussed the latest regional developments over the phone on Thursday, especially the evolving situations in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.
They stressed the necessity of preventing the region from sliding into a broader war and the importance of reducing tensions and exercising self-restraint at this critical stage, according to a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry.
Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's efforts to de-escalate tensions with different regional and international actors, emphasizing that reaching a ceasefire in Gaza is "the essential factor to stop the regional escalation."
The United States vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza on Wednesday, drawing harsh criticism from most of the UN member states.
