The Sundhnuksgigar Volcano erupted for the seventh time along the Reykanes Peninsula in Iceland.

Footage shows a large mass of has and hot lava burning through the body of land at night on November 20.

The two miles (3km) long fissure unleashed molten rocks just 10 miles (16km) from the Keflavik International Airport.

Tourist Brian Simpson, who saw the natural phenomenon while travelling, said: 'We woke up to a volcanic eruption. It made for a great bus ride to the airport.'

Grindavik town faced evacuation as toxic gas clouds swept the area being on edge of the activity.

Authorities confirmed there is no immediate rush to air travel with wind directions sparing the airport.

Geophysics professor Magnus Tumi Guomundsson, who flew over the site with Civil Protection, said: 'This is slightly smaller than the last eruption but it is a stark reminder of the power beneath Iceland's surface.'
