China has expanded its visa-free policy to nine additional countries, including eight in Europe, allowing their citizens to enter for up to 30 days without a visa for business, tourism, and other visits starting Nov. 30, 2024.
The policy now includes Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Malta, Estonia, and Latvia, alongside other nations already benefiting from China's open-door approach.
Tourism professionals from Romania have welcomed the move as a step toward stronger bilateral ties.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): NINA MERLUSCA, Destination manager of Romanian tourism city Piatra-Neamt
"I just heard about this (China's expanded visa-free policy), and I'm very excited because I have been to China, but either needed a visa or either had to stay for 72 hours, and then exit the country. So this is excellent news to exchange tourists between the two countries."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): CIPRIAN SLEMCO, President of the Bucovina Tourism Association
"I think the Chinese market is quite important for Eastern Europe, and of course for Romania. My experience in China was very good. I suppose our government will develop this relationship more than it is right now."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Bucharest.
