STORYLINE:

The Arab League (AL) Council held on Sunday an emergency session upon a request from Iraq to discuss last week's Israeli letter to the Security Council in which it threatened to attack Iraq.
   
Hossam Zaki, assistant secretary-general of the Arab League, said that the Israeli threats to Iraq will not affect the venue of the Arab summit scheduled to be held in Baghdad, explaining that a delegation from the General Secretariat will go there soon to coordinate the arrangements for the summit.
   
Zaki added that the Israeli threats to Iraq represent an extension of the occupation's violations of international legitimacy and complete disregard for the United Nations Security Council resolutions.
  
Zaki warned that the continued Israeli intransigence could lead to the outbreak of a comprehensive regional war in light of the significant expansion in the scope of the aggression.
   
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said Saturday that it had sent official letters to the UN Security Council, the UN Secretary-General, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation over Israel's possible attacks on Iraq.
   
Iraq's letters came in response to an Israeli complaint to the UN Security Council against Iran-backed militias in Iraq carrying out attacks on Israel, which holds Baghdad responsible for the attacks.

Since the outbreak of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Gaza Strip on Oct. 7, 2023, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella body for Iraqi Shiite militias, has repeatedly carried out drone and missile attacks on Israel.
