Durham, United States - November 19, 2024 After days of tracking reports of a distressed coyote in South Durham County, Animal Services deputies from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office performed a remarkable rescue on November 19, 2024. The coyote, spotted multiple times with a plastic jar stuck on its head, had been unable to eat or drink, leaving residents in the Parkwood area deeply concerned. “Calls started to come in a few days ago,” said Animal Services Captain Mark Manning. Deputies searched diligently but initially failed to locate the animal. On Monday afternoon, a breakthrough came when a resident on Grandale Drive reported another sighting. Deputies quickly responded, restrained the coyote with a catch pole, and successfully removed the jar. After confirming it had no injuries, the animal was safely released back into the wild. “These deputies used their training and compassion to create a positive outcome,” said Sheriff Clarence Birkhead, praising the team’s dedication. Residents are reminded not to approach distressed wildlife. Instead, contact the Sheriff’s Office at 919-560-0900 or reach out to North Carolina Wildlife’s helplines for assistance.
