Baku, Azerbaijan - November 22, 2024 The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) has postponed its closing as disagreements persist over key issues. The COP29 kicked off in Azerbaijan's capital city of Baku on Nov 11 and was scheduled to close on Friday. A key task of this year's summit is to determine a new target of financial contributions that developed nations should make to support developing countries in addressing climate change after 2025. In 2009, developed countries agreed to mobilize 100 billion U.S. dollars annually by 2020 to support climate action in developing countries, and the goal was later extended to 2025. The Azerbaijani COP29 presidency updated the draft text on Friday afternoon. However, there are still great differences on the core issues including the new collective quantified goal (NCQG). At this summit, the issue of climate funding for NCQG is a primary concern. In order to support the transition of developing countries to a climate-resilient future, all parties aim to establish global climate funding targets for the period after 2025, building upon the agreement reached in 2009.
