United States - November 13, 2024 A dangerous high-speed chase ended with the arrest of a smuggler and four illegal immigrants after a pursuit along US-277 in Val Verde County. Jose Rigoberto Perez Calderon, an El Salvadoran national, led Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers on a reckless chase, driving on the wrong side of the road and narrowly avoiding a head-on collision with a semi-truck. Calderon eventually stopped the Honda Civic, abandoned the vehicle, and fled on foot. Troopers quickly apprehended Calderon, who had been hiding in the brush. He was arrested and charged with evading arrest and smuggling persons. The four illegal immigrants, from Mexico and Honduras, were also arrested for evading law enforcement.
