Rome, Italy - November 22, 2024 A dramatic protest unfolded today as members of the activist group Bruciamo Tutto hurled balloons filled with vibrant red, yellow, and purple paint at the Ministry of Education (MIUR) in response to controversial statements made by Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara. At noon, three activists climbed the ministry's steps, shouting to draw attention before launching the tempera-filled balloons at the building's facade. The protestors unfurled a banner bearing their group’s name and delivered impassioned speeches condemning the minister’s comments. Witnesses report that police intervened shortly after, removing the activists, who appeared to be in passive resistance. One protestor, Chloé, called out Minister Valditara's "inaptitude" and criticized his comments reducing patriarchy to a "legal remnant of machism." She argued that patriarchy is a deeply entrenched social system requiring systemic change beginning with education. "We are here in solidarity with the Cecchettin family and all those afflicted and angry," she declared. Another activist, Anna, vowed continued resistance, stating, "Even if they arrest us, more will come. We are the anger, the pain, and the revolution that will overthrow patriarchy." The protest comes after Minister Valditara claimed patriarchy was ideological and blamed high rates of gender violence on migrants. Activists countered with data from ISTAT (2024), revealing 93.9% of femicide perpetrators in Italy are Italian, debunking claims that immigration fuels gender violence. The group highlighted the systemic nature of patriarchy, pointing to historical legislative failures such as the law allowing rapists to escape punishment by marrying their victims—a provision that was only repealed in 1981. They also noted that marital rape was not recognized as a crime until 2001. Despite overall declines in homicide rates since 2002, femicide numbers remain alarmingly steady. This year alone, 88 femicides have been recorded, with 92.7% of female murder victims killed by men. The activists argue this demonstrates a pervasive cultural issue unaddressed by government leaders, particularly within the education system. As paint drips from the ministry’s walls, Bruciamo Tutto makes its stance clear: systemic violence cannot be ignored, and silence is no longer an option.
