Indonesia: Relocating Indonesia's capital is necessary choice for development
Jakarta, Indonesia - Recent The relocation of Indonesia's capital city from Jakarta to Nusantara on the island of Borneo is a strategic decision made to boost the development of the country's less developed eastern regions, according to an Indonesian urban planning expert. The Indonesian parliament passed a bill into law on Tuesday, officially designating Jakarta as a "special region" following an earlier decision to move the capital city of the vast archipelago state away from Jakarta, on the island of Java, to Nusantara, situated in North Penajam Paser regency, in East Kalimantan Province on the island of Borneo. Former President Joko Widodo previously explained that the move was necessitated by Jakarta's overcrowding and chronic congestion. Nirwono Joga, an urban planning analyst at Indonesia's Trisakti University, said Indonesia's plan to relocate its capital is a strategic development choice to promote the economy of eastern regions of the nation. The construction of Indonesia's new capital, which will be developed in five phases, was officially started in mid-2022, and is scheduled to be completed in 2045. The plan foresees that the future capital will be home to more than 2 million people upon completion. Nirwono Joga believes that the relocation of the capital will lead to a large amount of infrastructure construction, create new jobs, and attract domestic and foreign investments. The construction of the new capital is seen as a symbol of Indonesia's future development vision, and urban construction will highlight the concepts of smart, green and sustainable development, he said.
