Vientiane, Laos - November 21, 2024 Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun on Thursday called for the need to develop a long-term strategic vision to steadily advance maritime security cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Dong made the remarks at the 14th China-ASEAN Defense Ministers' Informal Meeting held in Vientiane, capital of Laos. The meeting was co-chaired by Dong and Chansamone Chanyalath, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense of Laos which is taking the rotating chair of ASEAN for 2024. Dong stated that under the strategic guidance of the leaders of both sides, China-ASEAN security cooperation has not only benefited each other, but also contributed to the region and the world at large in recent years. Regardless of the changing international landscape, China will steadfastly work with ASEAN to enhance unity and mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation, properly manage differences, and always be good partners who share weal and woe and support each other, said Dong. Noting that maritime issues concern the common interests of all parties, Dong called for the need to develop a long-term strategic vision to steadily advance maritime security cooperation and strive to transform contradictions and difficulties into opportunities for cooperation. Defense leaders of ASEAN countries also spoke highly of the development of China-ASEAN relations, praised China's respect for ASEAN's centrality in regional cooperation, and expressed their willingness to further engage in more practical security cooperation with China to jointly maintain regional peace and stability and sustainable development. After the meeting, Dong held talks the defense ministers of Japan and Thailand, respectively.
