Brazil: UNESCO Chief calls for action on climate misinformation at G20
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - Recent A United Nations agency chief has underscored a global initiative to tackle climate change disinformation launched at the just-concluded G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 19th G20 Summit was held in the Southern Hemisphere coastal city from Monday to Tuesday, under the theme of "building a just world and a sustainable planet". The leaders of major countries identified sustainable development and climate action as a priority focus during the gathering. In an interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) on Wednesday, Audrey Azoulay, director-general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), highlighted the urgent need to address the severe challenges posed by climate change and the disruptive impact of misinformation on public understanding and global climate efforts. In response, UNESCO, in collaboration with other UN agencies and the Brazilian government, launched the Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change. This initiative aims to strengthen scientific research and the accurate dissemination of climate-related information, ensuring transparency and reliability to support global climate action. The UN official noted that the initiative will also feed into the 30th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in the Brazilian Amazonian city of Belem next year. How is the information conveyed, what are the sources of information, how does it reach the people -- there is a lot that we don't know about that, there is a lot of also false information about science, about scientific fact. To help citizens being well informed about scientific facts, we've decided to launch this initiative to support information integrity about climate. What we will do specifically is that the member states will contribute to a fund. This fund will finance research about this production of information, dissemination of information, and support scientific information."; [SHOT OVERLAYING SOUNDBITE] FILE: UN Headquarters, New York City - Date Unknown 5.
