Iceland - November 21, 2024 Iceland’s volatile landscape erupted into chaos late Wednesday night as the Sundhnúksgígar volcano burst to life, marking the seventh eruption in less than a year. The fissure, stretching 3 kilometers (1.8 miles), unleashed molten fury just 10 miles from Keflavík International Airport. Brian Simpson, a tourist who captured the event on video, described the dramatic scene: “We woke up to a volcanic eruption... Made for a great bus ride to the airport.” Nearby Grindavík, a town already on edge from prior volcanic activity, faced evacuation as toxic gas clouds swept the area. Authorities confirmed no immediate risk to air travel, with winds sparing the airport from disruption. “This is slightly smaller than the last eruption,” said geophysics professor Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson, who flew over the site with Civil Protection. “But it’s a stark reminder of the power beneath Iceland’s surface.” With homes and businesses evacuated, Iceland’s fiery saga shows no signs of cooling.
