Dramatic footage shows a teenager narrowly avoiding being crushed by a tram after hugging a girl and running across the tracks without looking.

The incident occurred at the Tesatura Iasi tram station in Iasi, Romania, just after 6:30 pm on Wednesday, November 6.

The video shows the teenager hugging the girl as the streetcar approaches their stop.

Suddenly, he turns around and runs across the tracks, seemingly heading towards another vehicle.

However, he fails to notice the approaching trolley and comes within inches of being hit.

The public transport vehicle was moving slowly as it neared the stop, sparing him from being crushed.

A woman witnessing the scene can be seen crossing herself in shock.

The driver told local media: 'I was driving at low speed anyway because I ran over a pothole in the area, and the traffic light had just turned green.

'However, if he finished the hug a second later, then there was a very high risk that I would run over him with the tram.'

He added: 'The woman next to him tried to warn him and when she saw what happened, she crossed herself. It was a miracle between timing the traffic light and hugging the boy, otherwise tragedy could have happened.

'In the video, you get the impression that there was some distance, but in reality, it was only a few centimetres. He didn't even realise what was happening because he didn't turn his head to see the tram.'
